Major Donors Direct Fundraising

As an experienced relationship fundraiser, I am skilled at tapping into networks to unlock funding. Over the last 15 years I have worked with major donors, philanthropists, patrons, celebrities and the royal household to generate millions of pounds for charity.

Achievements

  • A lead gift of £475k from one major donor to support an extension to a building.
  • A recent major donor event for 60 guests which raised circa £100k and cost next to nothing.
  • A series of gifts totalling £125k from one donor in a 12 month period
  • A bespoke challenge event with a donor and his friends which raised £40k.

Never underestimate the potential donors you already have access to through your database. On average, about 1% of your database will be millionaires with the capacity to make significant gifts to your cause. Some will already be donating to similar charities and others will assume that you will be aware of them (and in some cases are expecting you to make contact!).

Services

I can offer the following services to help you maximise income from major donors

  • Identify the most useful database screening service to find potential donors
  • Research prospects and provide a bespoke list to work from
  • Approach prospects, develop relationships and ‘make the ask’
  • Recruit high level networkers and donors to your Board or fundraising committee
  • Organise special events to cultivate prospects and solicit gifts
  • Train staff, trustees and volunteers to carry out these activities

Useful Tip

Invite prospects to an event which showcases the difference you are making and highlights the need for further funds. Include a speech from a charity representative who is on the frontline providing a vital service alongside someone who is benefiting from that service. Agree how you are going to approach each guest on the night. This should include (i) who is going to approach them (ii) information you want to gather (iii) information you want to convey (iv) a reason to make contact again and (v) an agreement to do so. Follow up within 24 hours to pin down next steps (invitation to come and see the service in action, 121 meeting with the CEO, etc.)
